In 2005, the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation made a $1 million pledge to assist in the purchase of Wisconsin's first CyberKnife radiosurgery system. The CyberKnife began treating patients at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center in March 2006.
Since then, several hundred patients have been treated for cancer of the brain, lung, liver, pancreas, spine or pelvis. Many of these patients were unable to have traditional invasive surgery, and the robotically delivered noninvasive CyberKnife system provided a viable outpatient treatment option.
This highly innovative technology is comprised of image guidance technology and precise robotic mechanics that deliver treatment within an accuracy of 1mm. The CyberKnife can also track moving targets with precision, such as tumors in the chest and abdomen that move with breathing.
